FAQs
Why is whole bean coffee better?
Coffee beans retain their freshness for a longer period of time compared to ground coffee or coffee in capsules, as these can lose their quality when stored for long periods of time. This is due to the fact that they undergo an oxidation process in which they lose approximately 50% of their sensory properties within the first 24 hours of being ground. Freshness is essential for a high quality coffee as it guarantees that the aromas and flavours are better expressed, also avoiding unpleasant flavours of ageing.
Coffee beans also offer unique versatility. You can adjust the grind according to the brewing method allowing you to prepare a cup of coffee to suit your taste, from a fine grind for espresso to a coarse grind for French press. This gives you complete control over the extraction and also personalises the coffee experience.
What is specialty coffee?
Specialty coffee is a category of coffee that stands out for its superior quality, it is known as the ‘third wave of coffee’, and in this movement the parameters under which a coffee should be considered of excellence have been determined.
- For a coffee to be a specialty coffee, it must meet certain requirements, for example:
- Be grown on land where the soil and biodiversity is optimal as this allows for high quality beans and in many cases with greater complexity of flavour.
- It must be treated with extreme care in all its processes (harvesting, processing, drying, etc.). For example, harvesting must be done by hand and not with machinery that damages the coffee cherry and the plant itself.
- Traceability is essential, i.e. to know all the information about its cultivation: what region it comes from, at what altitude it was grown, what the farm is, who the farmer is, what kind of processing and drying was done, etc.
- Have an SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) score of 80 points or higher, which guarantees excellence.
How many cups come out of one kilo of coffee beans?
The number of cups of coffee you can get from one kilo of coffee beans varies depending on the preparation and the amount of coffee you use per cup. On average, one kilo of coffee beans usually provides around 120-140 cups of coffee, using approximately 7-8 grams of ground espresso coffee per cup. If you use a filter method, a standard recipe of 20 grams of drip filter ground coffee with 300ml of water would yield up to 50 cups.
How to prepare coffee at home?
The preparation of coffee at home depends on the method you choose, such as French press, filter coffee machine, aeropress, espresso, among others. Each method has its own specific instructions. Make sure you use quality water, fresh coffee beans and follow the proper grinding guidelines and proportions to get the best flavour. In our blog you have different recipes to prepare at home, we are sure you will love them!
What is the difference between the different types of coffee?
Different types of coffee differ in aspects such as origin, processing, roasting, taste and aroma. Each coffee variety has unique characteristics that can range from fruity and floral notes to more nutty or chocolaty flavors. Coffee origin and processing techniques also significantly influence the final flavor profile, allowing for a wide range of taste experiences. Likewise, the level of roast allows the different notes that a coffee can offer to be highlighted; for example, a light roast will bring out more acidic and floral notes, while a dark roast will develop more chocolates and nuts.
What is the benefit of specialty coffee?
Specialty coffee offers several benefits, both in terms of taste, social and environmental impact, and even health. Thanks to its selective cultivation and production process, it offers a unique sensory experience with complex flavors that you won’t find in traditional coffee.
It also promotes sustainability, as it comes from responsible crops that respect the environment and guarantee fair conditions for coffee growers. Its traceability makes it possible to know its origin, variety and process, ensuring superior quality in every cup.
Believe it or not, specialty coffee is also better for your health compared to traditional coffee, due to the extensive care that is given to it from its cultivation. In this type of coffee, defects (such as over-fermentation, insect bites, rotten beans, etc.) are avoided at all costs, unlike traditional coffee, where there is no such care. The same with roasting, a roasted specialty coffee can under no circumstances be burnt, whereas traditional coffees usually have a very high roasting rate, which makes them completely harmful to your health.
Why is coffee beans better than capsules?
Choosing whole bean coffee not only improves the quality and taste of each cup, but is also a more economical option in the long run. Although the initial investment in a grinder or coffee machine may seem higher, the cost per cup of coffee beans is lower than that of capsules.
In addition, coffee beans offer superior freshness, taste and quality compared to capsules. By grinding it just before brewing, its essential oils and natural aromas are better preserved, resulting in a richer, more complex cup.
In addition, by opting for coffee beans, you also save on environmental costs by avoiding plastic and aluminium waste from disposable capsules.
If you are looking for quality, better taste and long-term savings, coffee beans are the best choice – your wallet and the planet will thank you!
