Did you know…?

The process for decaffeinating coffee dates back to 1903 in Germany, thanks to coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius. Since then, the industry has worked hard to find more efficient and healthier methods that preserve the coffee's sensory characteristics, and they have certainly succeeded! One of these methods is the sugarcane process, which is the one we use for our decaf.

How is coffee decaffeinated?

The process we use at Sensorial Coffee Roasters is known as the sugarcane method, which uses a natural component called ethyl acetate. This compound is derived from sugarcane and is key to removing caffeine from the beans.

First, we steam the green coffee beans to open their pores. Then, we soak them in ethyl acetate for several hours, which allows the caffeine to separate from the bean. Afterward, the beans are submerged in water to remove any residual ethyl acetate. Finally, they are steamed again to ensure the beans are completely clean and ready to be roasted.

This is how we guarantee that you can enjoy a decaf coffee with all the flavor and aroma you love, but without the caffeine! 💚
