Espresso machines for specialty coffee at home

An espresso machine forces hot water at about 9 bars of pressure through very finely ground and compacted coffee. In about 25-30 seconds, you get a short, intense coffee with body and a dense crema, which is also the base for a cortado, flat white, cappuccino, or latte. At Sensorial Coffee, we select manual and semi-automatic espresso machines designed to bring out the best in specialty coffee: stable temperature, good pressure, and a steam wand for texturing milk. There are models for beginners and for those seeking total control over extraction. Pair it with freshly roasted coffee and a good grinder, and you'll have a coffee-shop-quality espresso at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make coffee with an espresso machine?

Preheat the machine with the portafilter in place. Grind the coffee fresh, on a fine setting, and put 16–18 g in the basket. Level it, tamp it firmly and evenly, and extract about 36 g of coffee in 25–30 seconds. On each coffee machine's product page you'll find specific instructions for making and adjusting coffee with that model.

What grind do I need for espresso?

Very fine. If the coffee runs too fast and tastes sour or watery, grind finer. If it takes too long and tastes bitter, grind coarser.

Do I need a grinder to use an espresso machine?

It's highly recommended. Espresso is very sensitive to grind size, and grinding just before brewing preserves the aromas and the crema. If you don't have a grinder yet, we can grind the coffee for espresso when you place your order.

You can also see our selection of grinders.

What is the difference between an espresso machine and a capsule machine?

With an espresso machine you use freshly ground coffee and control the dose, grind and extraction. You get more flavour and freshness at a lower cost per cup, without any capsule waste.

Which espresso machine is best for a beginner?

To start out, look for a machine that lets you control the main extraction parameters without being overly complex. It's also important to consider the space you have, the type of drinks you want to make and your budget.
