Enjoying a cup of specialty coffee in the comfort of your home is a rewarding and satisfying experience. However, achieving the perfect balance of flavor and aroma can seem quite a challenge. In this article, we will give you various tips for preparing specialty coffee at home, regardless of the method you choose: drip coffee maker, French press, espresso machine, or any other. Get ready to enjoy an exceptional cup every time!
1. Choose fresh, high-quality specialty coffee
Starting with freshly roasted, high-quality specialty coffee is essential. Look for specialty shops, like ours😉, that offer carefully selected beans roasted to highlight their best attributes. Discover all our specialty coffees here.
2. Grind the beans right before brewing
The grind influences coffee extraction, so it is best to grind the beans right before brewing the drink. The proper grind depends on the method you use. For drip coffee makers, a medium grind is ideal, while the French press requires a coarse grind. Espresso machines, on the other hand, need a fine, uniform grind.
3. Control the water temperature
Water temperature plays a vital role in coffee extraction. Ideally, the water should be between 90°C and 96°C. If you don't have a thermometer, let the water boil and let it rest for approximately 30 seconds before pouring it over the ground coffee. Hot water will ensure proper extraction of the coffee's flavors and oils.
4. Find the perfect ratio
The ratio of coffee to water is crucial. For most methods, a 1:16 ratio—that is, one part coffee to 16 parts water—is a good guideline. However, you can adjust this ratio according to your personal preferences to obtain a stronger or milder coffee.
5. Control the extraction time
The time the water is in contact with the coffee affects the final taste. In a drip coffee maker, this is preset, which you can see in our post on Preparing the perfect coffee with the V60. But in other methods, like the French press or manual pour-over methods, you can control the extraction time. Generally, 3 to 4 minutes is suitable, but again, it is adjustable to your taste.
Now you are ready to enjoy the best specialty coffee at home!
