The world of coffee is as diverse as the palates that enjoy it. The two preeminent brewing methods are filter coffee and espresso, each with its own characteristics and sensory experiences. But how do you know which is the best option for you? Filter coffee or espresso? At Sensorial Coffee Roasters, we want to help you find out.
Differences between filter coffee and espresso
Both brewing methods use the same coffee beans, but the way flavors are extracted changes the texture, taste, and intensity. Their main differences are:
-
Extraction method:
- Filter coffee: It is prepared by pouring hot water over ground coffee, allowing the liquid to filter slowly through a medium, such as paper or metal, before dripping into a carafe or cup. Methods such as V60, Chemex, drip coffee makers, among others, can be used.
- Espresso: It is made by forcing hot water at high pressure through finely ground coffee, extracting a small concentrate of up to 30 ml in just 25-30 seconds.
-
Flavor and body:
- Filter coffee: It usually highlights brighter, cleaner, and more complex notes. It has a lighter body and more pronounced acidity, which allows for the appreciation of the deeper nuances of the coffee.
- Espresso: It is intense, with a dense body and a more velvety texture. The flavors are more concentrated and have a balance between sweetness and acidity. Additionally, it has the iconic crema on top.
- Caffeine: Although espresso is more concentrated, a cup of filter coffee (usually 250 ml) contains more caffeine than a shot of espresso (30 ml). However, since it is consumed in smaller amounts, espresso may seem stronger.
-
Time and ease of preparation:
- Filter coffee: It usually takes longer (3 to 5 minutes), but it is easier to prepare with little equipment.
- Espresso: It is fast (less than 1 minute), but requires specialized machinery and a certain level of technique to achieve a good extraction.
