How to choose the right grind for each brewing method

Molienda de café

Coffee grinding is one of the most important factors in achieving a perfect cup. At Sensorial Coffee Roasters, we know that the freshness and quality of the coffee are essential, but the type of grind can make the difference between excellent coffee and average coffee. Choosing the right one for your brewing method ensures that the flavor and aroma are maximized. Here, we explain how to select the ideal grind according to the method you use.

1. Coarse grind: Ideal for French press and Cold Brew

A coarse grind is characterized by large particles, similar in size to sea salt. It is perfect for brewing methods that require a long steeping time, such as French press and cold brew. With this grind, the water penetrates the coffee particles more slowly, extracting flavors in a balanced way and avoiding over-extraction, which could lead to bitter flavors.

2. Medium grind: Perfect for drip coffee makers like Chemex, V60, Kalita, etc.

Similar in texture to granulated sugar, this is the most versatile. It works well in drip coffee makers and manual pour-over methods like the Chemex. This allows the water to penetrate the coffee particles in a more controlled manner, extracting the best from each coffee and providing balance to the brew. It is important to remember that a grind that is too fine can clog the filter, while one that is too coarse can result in weak coffee.

3. Fine grind: Essential for espresso

A fine grind, comparable to powdered sugar, is crucial for high-pressure methods like espresso. Since water is injected under pressure through the coffee particles, a fine grind is necessary to ensure a complete extraction in a short period of time. A grind that is too coarse could result in weak espresso, while one that is too fine could result in very acidic espresso.

Choosing the right grind not only improves the flavor of your coffee but also optimizes the brewing experience. At Sensorial Coffee Roasters, we recommend experimenting with different grinds until you find the one that best suits your method and personal taste. Your perfect cup awaits!
